What is I AM THAT GIRL?
I AM THAT GIRL is a 501c3 non-profit that my best friend (Emily Greener) and I founded in 2008. IATG is passionate about building community for girls on and off line! We have local chapters all over the world, as well as an incredible social media community that reminds girls (daily) that they are awesome! I just wrote the book (also entitled) I AM THAT GIRL and 10% of the profits will go to support my organization!
What the book is about?
The book is about reminding all of us that we are more than enough! That despite what hand of cards we are dealt (whether we are raised in poverty, experience abuse, have a deadbeat dad, have suffered from addiction, or are insecure from not having any serious hardships) that our lives matter, what we think is important and we have an endless array of ways in which we can contribute to the world. The book, I AM THAT GIRL, is a manifesto for the organization, and a how to guide- to be THAT GIRL aka the most badass versions of any girl!! I also asked thirty of my phenomenal girl friends to contribute stories with their best, life advice… so it’s a literary collage of inspiration, encouragement, tough questions that make you think and practical advice to deal with life.
What challenges did you encounter while writing I AM THAT GIRL and how did you overcome them?
Ha! Where do I even begin?? Let me start by saying, this was the ultimate marathon and I have only ever run sprints in my life so it was quite the surprise when it took me over a year and a half to complete. This book tested my discipline, my work ethic and my resilience. How do you get up and do anything when you don’t “feel like it??” There were a lot of rewards and incentives I integrated into the project and a lot of soul searching. I realized my audience (even if only one girl every read my book), deserved my full attention. So every morning I woke up, I meditated and prayed, asking for a deeper understanding of my life experiences and an eloquence and creativity that transcended my own ability so that my words would passionately resonate. Being an “author” was always a HUGE dream of mine, but like any dream worthy of the chase, it was unequivocally one of the hardest things I’ve ever accomplished. My “WHY” for writing the book (to tangibly love girls back to life) was always bigger than my excuses for procrastinating. When we are crystal clear on the “WHY” for something we want to accomplish, quitting never presents itself as an option!
And who are the most influential people in your life & why?
My mother (Claudia) hands down is one of the most influential women in my life. My mom is my rock, my endless cheerleader, and one of my best friends. My family in general (especially my dad) is incredibly influential in my life as well. I grew up with four big brothers and a baby sister and we are all very close. Other than my immediate family, my fiancé (Brad) is probably the most influential person in my life. Brad is who I’m choosing to do life with and what he thinks means more than almost anyone! He’s also my biggest fan, my sanctuary and my definition of “home.”
