The New Hollywood presents... ‘Free to Express’ By: Beth Navarro
“The best road to progress is freedom’s road” John F. Kennedy
There are 27 millions slaves in the world today. Each year thousands of slaves are trafficked into the United States. Slaves work in fields, brothels, homes, mines, and restaurants. Anywhere slave owners can feed their greed. Ninety dollars is the average cost of a human slave around the world. 1 Slavery is not only a problem of the past. It is unfortunately very much a problem that still plagues the world today.
Free the Slaves, a nonpartisan, politically independent nonprofit organization. It’s mission is to end slavery worldwide. Free the Slaves knows that slavery runs rampant where poor people lack economic opportunities, education and government. A holistic approach is required to eradicate slavery forever. They free slaves around the world by working with grassroots organizations where slavery flourishes. They record and share their stories so people in power can see slavery and be inspired to work for freedom. They enlist businesses to clean slavery out of their product chains and empower consumers to stop buying into slavery. They work with governments to produce effective antislavery laws then hold them to their commitments. They research what works and what doesn't so that we use our resources strategically and effectively to end slavery. Forever. 2
The New Hollywood, a woman’s goal group based in Los Angeles and New York made up of professional women in the entertainment industry, was inspired and moved by the work the Free the Slaves organization does and felt compelled to help.
“Our intention in creating this benefit is to bring awareness to an epidemic that is often times overlooked, to introduce the amazing work that Free The Slaves provides to those who are unfamiliar with the organization and lastly to be able to use the ladies of The New Hollywood's resources, talents and voices for those who aren't able to be heard due to this oppression. " says Brianna Brown, actress and founder of TNH.
This benefit, entitled Free to Express, is an evening of entertainment focusing on the uplifting theme of “Freedom of Expression”. The performance incorporates a collaboration of art, video, spoken word written from actual survivors’ testimonials, choreographed dance and musical pieces. Broadway’s Musical theatre veteran, Alexis Carra, will be directing the ladies of TNH. They want to celebrate these survivors and also create a fun, inspiring evening. Through this performance TNH strives to raise awareness of how donations can help accomplish Free the Slaves’ mission to abolish slavery worldwide.
Free the Slaves liberates slaves around the world and attacks the systems that allow slavery to exist. Come out for an amazing entertaining evening and help this wonderful organization continue this important work.
