Changing the World, One Mindful Purchase at a Time
by Taryn Hipwell
Many don’t stop to think about what impact their purchase has on themselves, let alone factory workers or the environment. When it comes to fashion, when was the last time you stopped to asked yourself, ‘Who made my clothes?’ or ‘What’s in my tee?’
The fashion industry is considered to be the second largest polluting industry in the world. From the harmful pesticides sprayed on crops to chemical detergents used to wash our garments, fashion’s impact expands farther than just our personal wardrobe. Alas, it’s not all doom-and-gloom. We have the power to make a sustainable impact and by default make the world a cleaner, kinder place. Here are three steps to shop eco-friendly:
Part of the problem with the fashion industry is over production. With 26 billion pounds of textile waste entering U.S. landfills, there’s simply too much clothing cycling through our closets. Secondhand clothing that doesn’t end up being sold in thrift stores are often exported to third world countries which often burden the local fashion economy. Start thinking about investing in a few quality pieces that will last you a long time!
The bad news is that there are many large companies exploiting their workers and the earth, the good news is that there’s something we can all do about it. All around the world there are growing numbers of sustainable and ethical brands popping up. Brands such as Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, Reformation, and Industry of All Nations are creating exciting alternatives to typical fast-fashion and they also share technologies with shoppers and other designers.
