Dream Catcher by Rachel Cannon
I have become a dream-catcher by trade — helping my friends fund their futures by taking charge of their life. Always a dreamer with a strong faith, I get my motivation and drive from my father, who is a man that never let boundaries stop him. He was paralyzed when he was 15 and the doctors gave up on him walking, but he was determined and knew with his faith that he could overcome any obstacle; and he did. He walked. He got married. He had a family and has lived a wonderful life. I’ve watched my father run his own business with incredible integrity and drive, and I want my Rodan + Fields business to be exactly like that.
I have always had a love affair with the business world. I’ve had a million jobs in various fields: laser hair removal technician, patient counselor in a plastic surgeon’s office, producer for red carpet events, head of video licensing at WireImage, high profile celebrity trainer / yoga instructor and working sitcom actress. I was really good at making my employers a lot of money, but my salary seemed to stay the same, so I decided to find something that put me on the receiving end of my efforts. When my sister Lacy Cunningham told me about Rodan + Fields, it seemed like the perfect fit, allowing me freedom to do this around my busy schedule and the opportunity to build a business with residual income and social commerce.
As an actress married to a musician, we know financial stability isn’t a guarantee. While I love acting and have no plans to ever stop pursuing it, I love the challenge of Rodan + Fields as a side business to build something substantial for our future family. It is a legacy company, which means we can will this business to our children when we are gone! This was important to both my sister and me. Lacy is a stay-at-home mom to her very active 3-year-old son Oliver, who was born with Spina Bifida. They spend more time at Texas Children’s Hospital than a little kid should. She started Rodan + Fields to create a medical fund for him. I loved the idea of supporting them while building for my own future and bringing all of my smart, beautiful friends with me. We decided it would be fun to do together and worst-case scenario; we'd get great skin out of it.
We partnered with two of Forbes 50 Most Successful Self-Made Women, Dr Katie Rodan & Dr Kathy Fields, in September 2013. We were able to benefit from what they already established: an impeccable reputation in dermatology, worldwide recognition with Proactiv and retail success as the number one clinical line in Nordstrom. We get tons of free press in top magazines and talk shows (Allure, Bazaar, Oprah, Ellen, Beauty Report). The business awards and recognition we receive prove that we are a disrupter in this industry. We are not doing what’s been done before; we are carving out our own yellow brick road and flying down it at lightening speed. We are constantly being recognized for our sales technology and product innovation by entities such as Forbes, Fortune, Fox Opening Bell, the Direct Sales Association and Women’s Wear Daily to name a few. We are the 4th largest premium skincare company (behind Estee Lauder, Clinique and Lancôme). We are created by the same dermatologists that hold 80% of the acne market with Proactiv, and now with Rodan + Fields, they are targeting the Anti-Aging Market with even more precision through network marketing.
As a new consultant, I wasn’t afraid of a little elbow grease so I committed to a year knowing a start-up business takes time to build. Before Rodan + Fields, I was working as a celebrity scheduling assistant from home. Sometimes juggling up to 6 films at once, my flexible “side job” had me glued to my cell phone, life-lining on Red Bull and working up to 80 hours a week — all while auditioning, working on set and being a newlywed. I was busy and burned out and knew something had to give. I started my Rodan + Fields business "on the side” of all of this. In two months I hit L5, which is a huge milestone. In 4 months I replaced my scheduling salary and quit. In 8 months I had doubled that salary. In a year’s time I was sitting in my brand new white Lexus courtesy of Rodan + Fields, as was my sister. Lacy is now contributing (greatly) to Oliver’s medical needs, and he doesn’t even know she has a job. My husband and I are now in a place where babies can come whenever we are ready. Our skin looks better than ever! Clearly, we made out better than our worst-case scenarios.
Lacy and I made a commitment to make education a HUGE part of our journey. We got on the phone with sales support, the nursing staff, the legal department, and regional directors and asked a lot of questions. From our research, we developed a simple three-part training program that can get anyone’s business off the ground. We also built a website for our team which offers tons of training and a supportive community. This business is as simple as washing your face (which you already do) and telling your friends about it (which you probably already do). No parties to throw, no inventory to stock, no old-school auto-ship — Rodan + Fields has changed the game. In 18 months, we have grown a team of over 450 women and men who are all striving to make changes in their own lives. It is incredible to be a part of this movement of women supporting women. We have loved bringing along our sisters, mothers, best friends, loved ones, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. We offer mentorship to help get you started and customize your business, but at the end of the day, this is your business. We have built a massive community of support and are so proud to see our sister wives lift each other up on a daily basis. There is no competition or cattiness, but rather celebration of each other’s successes and support through our struggles.
We are grateful for the blessings Rodan + Fields brought into our lives. Lacy and I have seen each other more this year since our trips are tax write-offs as business partners! We have been awarded luxury trips, free cars and incredible gifts from the company. It has completely changed our financial situation. I’ve worked more consistently as an actor doing projects I LOVE (Mad Men, Fresh Off the Boat, The Millers, Major Crimes) and able to pass on the jobs that deter me from the career path I want since I’ve taken money out of the equation. I’ll let you in on a little secret, too. Skincare isn’t my passion. Empowering women, building a solid future for my family and supporting my acting dreams ARE my passions and this dynamic side business supports all of them.
I’m so grateful for the incredible friendships that have blossomed from a common goal of this business and deepened from really listening to each other. Over the past 18 months, I’ve sat by each of my leaders during a time of struggle and we worked through it together. Not because it had anything to do with our business, but because life comes first. Family first. Friendship first. This opportunity has turned me into a collector of dreams. I have always been driven to lend my voice to empowering other women, trying to help those that need it. I never thought it would come in the form of a skincare company, but I have come to realize that this is my calling. Acting gives me a name and this business gives me a purpose. This is my vehicle to provide a voice to the women in my life that need it. Some I know, some I have just met and some I can’t wait to welcome.
Our society lives and dies by a Yelp review and that is what we do; vouch for products we love and a business model that works and teach others to do the same. Since starting my Rodan + Fields journey, I have traveled more, laughed more, lived more and loved more! I never work more than 10 hours a week and my “work week” consists of helping my friends get incredible skincare or launching a business of their own. Worst-case, you get great skin. Best case... well, birds of a feather sit their butts in white Lexus leather!!
I’m so grateful to Brianna Brown for asking me to share my journey with Rodan + Fields. I know you all have incredible careers, and I love watching the heat you throw at them every day. I am so inspired by what Brianna has built with The New Hollywood. If you are looking for something to support your journey or if you are curious about the products, I would love to talk to you. You can reach me at rachelcannonRF@gmail.com and if you mention TNH Blog, I will throw in a gift with purchase.
