Kiko, the Hawaiian Wave, a Book About Finding Courage.
By Beth Navarro
Connection is a theme in everything I write. Everything. It’s something we all need and crave. I know it’s on my daughter’s minds right now as we prepare for another school year to start. (What if I don’t make friends, Mama?) If we find connection, it’s harder for the negativity to reign, isn’t it? Well, my second picture book, Kiko the Hawaiian Wave, is no different.
Kiko the Hawaiian Wave, illustrated by the amazing Cami Abel, is about a small ocean wave who desperately wants to find his surfer, but is afraid to venture beyond the safety of the shore. The annual surf contest is his chance to prove himself. Will Kiko be brave enough to form the perfect tube and find a surfer of his own? You’ll have to read to find out!
There is a clear connection I see that people have with the ocean, surfers in particular. I find it fascinating. While thinking about that, my (strange?) mind wandered to: Does the water feel it too? What if it did? That is where Kiko came from. Kiko longs for a surfer. He wants friend. He wants that connection. He wants purpose. It’s a story about finding courage, being kind and following dreams. I’m so excited for kids to connect with this story. I hope it helps them muster the courage to do something they’ve always wanted to do.
Kiko will officially launch into the world on September 7th. Here are ways you can support me:
