The world is starting to shift. I can feel it. I can feel it in the air. I can feel it in the ground. I can feel it in my gut. It is an empowering time for us to claim what’s ours. And by us, I mean humanity, and by what’s ours, I mean justice.
We’ve read the stories, the statistics, seen the news, listened to a friend, a relative, or some of us have experienced it first hand. But what are we doing to change it? To refuse it? How can we help?
Here is the fact from the UN: 1 in 3 women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. One in three. Right now, that is one billion women on the planet. One Billion! That means if it hasn’t happened to you, it’s happened to someone you know. It’s probably happened to a lot of people you know. This is the grim reality, and the impetus for change. It is the driving force behind One Billion Rising.
One Billion Rising is a revolution. A global phenomenon. We are striking up, rising up, demanding justice and shouting loud for all to hear. We REFUSE to live in this statistic anymore. It’s unjust. It’s cruel. It’s barbaric. Here’s the good news: we have the ability to change it.
Rape, abuse, genital mutilation, all have something in common: they’re human inflicted. Thus, they can be stopped with human intervention. It is up to us to rise up, seek and claim justice to all who are suffering, and have suffered. NO MORE!
Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, and founder of V-Day (a non profit dedicated to end violence against women and girls) started this movement last year. Here’s what she said about why dancing is at the core of this revolution: “Dancing insists we take up space, and though it has no set direction, we go there together. Dance is dangerous, joyous, sexual, holy, disruptive, and contagious and it breaks the rules. It can happen anywhere, at any time, with anyone and everyone, and it’s free. Dance joins us and pushes us to go further and that is why it’s at the center of One Billion Rising.” Last year, on February 14, 2013, One Billion people rose up and danced all over the world. . They reclaimed their bodies, claimed their right and place on this earth, they let their strong presence be known. People danced in places where it’s illegal to do so. People left work, risked arrest, all to RISE. This year, the theme is Justice. We are rising to bring Justice to the one in three. No more excuses, no more sweeping things under the table to avoid negative publicity at colleges and universities, no more female genital mutilation, no more un filed charges of rape, date rape, abuse. It’s time to refuse violence against women and girls, and get the justice we all deserve! If you don’t feel it yet, you will, this shift towards justice, as countries from around the world dance, claim, strike, RISE! Join the revolution on 2/14/14.
