About eight years ago, I experienced for the first time the excitement of holding a copy of a book I worked on. It was an acting book that I helped a very famous local acting coach with, a book that would sell around the world and spawn both a second printing and a follow up. It was an absolute thrill to say the least. But it was also a lot of work to get it done and get it published. A LOT of work! While I had been an award-winning freelance journalist for many years leading up to the project, this was the first time I had tackled anything of this magnitude. It was a little overwhelming and exhausting at times—from planning, organizing and executing the writing to putting together pitch packets and exploring all the publishing options to working through the publishing process itself to selling and marketing and more! I remember thinking, “Okay, there was definitely a learning curve here and the next one will be easier.”
It was…somewhat. The same could be said with each one that’s followed. Since that first book, I have written, co-written, ghost-written or edited over a dozen published titles and a handful more that are seeking either representation or publication. They have ranged from arts and entertainment books to how-to guides to sports compilations to autobiographies, fiction, cook books and more! With each one, I’ve learned a little more about the exciting but daunting process. I’ve gotten a solid grasp on the process as a whole, from the first time the idea pops up in an aspiring writer’s head to the moment they’re doing their final book signing.
And that’s why I started offering my Book Writing/Pitching/Publishing Seminar. I simply want to share what I’ve learned and help writers not only get their idea off the ground, but get it out there on the shelves (or in reader’s tablets!). I truly feel that EVERYONE has a book in them, but I know how overwhelming it can seem, especially if you don’t know where to start or what steps to take. I’m here to help you form a plan from start to finish!
A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to work with some of the talented ladies from The New Hollywood, who I met through my great friend Ragan Brooks. I was so thrilled to share some of my experiences and offer some advice to help them get their books off the ground. I can’t wait to read them! Ragan and Brianna told me so many wonderful things about the organization and all of its members…and hinted that there might be several prospective authors in the group. I’m hoping to see some more New Hollywood pros and friends at my seminar on Oct. 11, 2014.
You can check out a breakdown of what the seminar entails on my website (www.JimMartyka.com) in the “Blog” section. Basically, I’m going to give you everything you need to know about getting your book written, pitched, published and sold…no matter what kind of book you’re working on. I can’t say enough how exciting it is to see your name in print and I can’t wait to help a whole new batch of writers experience that feeling!
